Looking back

...and moving forward.

Despite the last 2 months of 2008 being very disappointing, overall the year was quite positive. I do not dwell on the negatives, but instead emphasize the positives.

Firstly, Boston might not have gone as well as I expected, but the mere fact that I was at the starting line means a lot to me. Every race is a new learning experience and I know I came back from Boston a more serious and experienced runner. Just because my first marathon went much easier than I had anticipated, I should not have taken it from granted. I learnt to be humble and respect the distance. I know I will be better prepared next time I run Boston.

Also, I was also pleasantly surprised that I am able to run much faster than I had thought. I especially made great strides at the half-marathon. I knew I could run a sub-1:30 time, but this year I ran the distance 3 times under 1:28. My PR now is just above 1:25. I know I can run faster and maybe that sub-3 marathon is not that elusive afterall.

Finally, as a byproduct of my knee and ankle injuries, I rediscovered swimming. I was surprised to find out that I could swim over 1 mile on a regular basis. I will definitely add more swimming to my training.

So what do I expect for 2009?

I plan to race more this year. Not only half and marathons, but the shorter distances as well. I was concentrating too much on those distances and simply forgot how fun racing actually is.

Nevertheless, I still want to run a sub-3 marathon. But also I want to run a sub 1:23 half and sub-38 10k. And just overall improve times in other distances.

More importantly, I want to have an injury free year.

Good luck on all those goals! They are impressive. And, good job focussing on the positives from '08. I know that can be tough to do sometimes.
